Part II: The End of the Story of Saturday, The Old Market, and The Butcher

Last night I asked my friend to help me write a nice Thank You note in Lithuanian to the butcher who helped me last Saturday recover my wallet in the middle of the Old Market.  She cheerfully did.  This morning I carefully copied it on an English "Thank You" note and took it with a box of chocolates to the Old Market.  I was worried that I wouldn't be able to find the butcher again but as soon as I approached the area,  he and his wife (?) looked up and smiled.  Saying a quick "Labai ačiū!" I handed him the note and box.  His broad smile in return signified his recognition.  We exchanged no words but my friend told me he'd be very appreciative that I remembered to return to thank him.  I don't know what he feels.  I do know what I feel: extreme gratitude, as great as last Saturday's.

  1. What a nice story about the butcher! I hope that you will remember good things about Lithuania. Interesting that I have just discovered your blog as you are leaving as we have been living in Lithuania for the past two years. We have just started our own Lithuania blog called Lithuania Travel documenting our experience about living and traveling in Lithuania.

I have not visited Lebanon, but recently had a visit from a relative who lives there. From what I heard, sounds like Lithuania is a better bet.

I hope it works out for you.

  2. Hi Gene: Lithuania was very good to me. I lived there for 4 years and worked with amazing people at LCC International University. I will miss them all, expats and Lithuanians alike. However, it is time for a break. The intensity of LCC requires time off. My Lebanese address is in the north and therefore safe, a university attached to a 12th C. Monastery. Now I see why it is so safe. The University is perched on the side of a mountain of rock.
    Best to you!
